Acne commonly occurs during adolescence but acne can also occur in adulthood. It is a common disorder of the skin's oil glands (sebaceous glands) that results in plugged pores that can become inflamed. However, sometimes acne can also be a manifestation of other diseases.
In most cases acne is not a serious health threat and can be managed easily. However, severe acne can lead to disfigurement, permanent scarring, which can be upsetting for people who suffer from the disorder.
